The rapid decline of the world’s rarest birds has prompted conservationists to fast-track plans to prevent their extinction. The population of the orange-bellied parrot in the Tasmanian wilderness has been artificially increased with the release of 24 captive birds. This year only 17 birds returned to the annual migration area at the Melaleuca outpost, down from about 50 last year. It is hoped the latest release of captive birds will bring the parrots back from the brink of extinction.
