Kern Studios president and CEO Barry Kern recently spearheaded the purchase of a former Army National Guard facility in Michoud for $1.25 million. The sale of the 12-acre New Orleans East site will allow Kern Studios to greatly expand its footprint, and will streamline the process of creating, storing and loading Mardi Gras floats and equipment, Kern said. “We own the building in front of that site,” Kern said. “This is just the expansion of that site. We continue to grow our business in New Orleans and outside of New Orleans, and this is the last natural place where you can get that much space.” The combination of the former Army National Guard property with the adjacent 10-acre site on Michoud Boulevard already owned by Kern Studios creates 22 acres of space that Kern said will soon be put to good use. “There will be float production, float storage, prop storage, manufacturing, it will happen out there,” he said. “We have facilities in Florida and Texas, where we just recently added over 50,00
