U18 worlds standouts and disappointments: Scott Wheeler’s risers and fallers - The Athletic

After 29 games in 11 days in Espoo and Vantaa, the 2024 IIHF U18 World Championship is over, with Canada winning gold. I was in Finland all tournament, splitting time between Metro Areena and Trio Areena. At the end of the event, my notebook had notes on 131 of the top prospects from the 2024, 2025 and 2026 drafts. Here are my standouts and risers and disappointments and fallers. Standouts and risers James Hagens (F, Team USA/2025 NHL Draft) What can you say, really? Hagens is now the U17 and U1…

Canada defeats USA to capture U18 IIHF gold - The Athletic

ESPOO, FINLAND — Canada defeated USA 6-4 in the 2024 Under-18 IIHF Men’s World Championship. The game was a story of two halves. The U.S. controlled the first two periods of the game. They outshot Canada by a margin of nearly twenty shots and were up 3-2 through two periods. Then midway through the third period, Canadian winger Ryder Ritchie and a USA player were tied up in a battle along the boards and USA winger Trevor Connelly came in and threw a hard hit on Ritchie. The hit resulted in a fiv…

Are teams going to make the same mistake twice with Cole Hutson? - ...

ESPOO, Finland — “Do you ever get nervous when Hutson’s walking the line as the last man back with a guy on his hip? Or are you just numb to it at this point?” It’s a question that could have just as easily been asked of Nick Fohr two years ago, when he was an assistant coach with USA Hockey’s 2004 age group at the NTDP and was registering 63 points in 60 games in advance of the selecting him with the 62nd pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. How Sam Dickinson became one of the top prospects in the 2024 NHL D...

London Knights assistant coach Dylan Hunter will tell you that everything changed for his team in the middle of December. It’s not a coincidence, he’ll also tell you, that that’s when everything changed for Sam Dickinson, too. From Dec. 14 to Jan. 20, the Knights won 14 straight games and took over first place in the OHL standings. Around that time, they also lost their two first-round picks, defenseman Oliver Bonk and forward Easton Cowan, to the Canadian world junior team. Another of their top…

Penguins prospect Owen Pickering still has plenty of room for growt...

Owen Pickering just wants — and needs — to get stronger. But one thing or another seems to keep standing in his way. It started with a growth spurt (or two, or three) that sprouted him from 5-foot-7 in his WHL draft year to 6-foot-4 in what felt like a matter of months. There was a time when he was getting taller so quickly that he’d show up to training sessions with his strength and conditioning coach Matt Asmundson “literally having growing pains.” Advertisement “Not the cliché, the actual thi…
