Carnie's Comments - It's My Day!

Carnie's Comments It's a role I've embraced and enjoyed for the past 16 years now. I am a disc jockey. It's a job I never thought I'd have. I wanted to be, and I suppose I was, a journalist. I started in the media business as a columnist and sports reporter at the local daily newspaper before a brief stint at university which was followed by earning a diploma at a trade school called Western Academy Broadcasting College in Saskatoon. I broke into broadcasting as a news and sports reporter and would soon add

Carnie's Comments - Throwback Thursday

Carnie's Comments Remember when you were a child, waking up on Christmas morning and heading straight to the Christmas tree to see what Santa left for you? What was the best gift you ever received? I have so many pleasant memories and got just about everything a kid could want but one gift I'll never forget is the Spalding J5-V football I got for Christmas in 1976. It was really all I wanted. You see, that particular football was the official ball of the Canadian Football League. They were pretty expensive, as I recall - like $50 or $60, which was a good chunk of change back then. In fact, in today's money, that would be well over $300. Not only did I get that football but I also got an official CFL kickoff tee. My friends and I would spend hours tossing that ball around and kicking field goals at the neighbourhood ball park. That ball lasted for many years. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/dmj-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1648064270259-

Carnie's Comments - Throwback Thursday

Carnie's Comments It's Throwback Thursday - just a minute to remember the good ol' days. I can remember how excited I used to get at this time of year when I was a little boy. The anticipation of the Holiday Season was something special. Oh, we celebrated as a family with food and drink and, of course, music. Both of my grandmas were accomplished piano players and we had one in the basement. We'd gather 'round and sing together and, sometimes, we'd just be quiet and listen to my dad sing some of his favourites. He was a really good singer and his mom absolutely loved to accompany him. It was something special to watch and hear. After the party wound down on Christmas Eve, it was time for little Robbie to get to bed but not before leaving Santa a snack. I always left him some cookies and a carrot for Rudolph and my mom insisted on leaving him a cold beer. I was never really sure about that. I had seen what consuming alcohol could do to some people. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900)

Carnie's Comments - All I Want for Christmas!

Carnie's Comments In the 80s many Christmas shoppers went goofy over Cabbage Patch Kids. Do you remember that? Every kid in the country wanted one. In the 90s we went crazy for Tickle Me Elmo with parents and grandparents scrambling to find them, leading to frenzied scenes in stores across the country. Times have changed. I'm reading that tech gadgets are a big thing this Christmas with many shopping for Apple AirPods Max which are top notch wireless headphones and the Amazon Kindle E-Reader which features long battery life and great library access. Another trending item this month is the lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag which is a stylish, practical accessory. A lot of people find themselves under pressure to deliver the goods at this time of year. I mean, if you have the means, you want to please the kids and your partner in life. Christmas shopping can be stressful for many of us at a time of year we should be looking forward to de-stressing. You know? googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()

Carnie's Comments - Fishin' & Sleddin'

Carnie's Comments We were talking about winter and looking forward to ice fishing and snowmobiling on the morning show today. The two activities go hand-in-hand for many and I witnessed that on one cold, winter's day many years ago. We were out on the ice catching some fish in a cozy fishin' shack when some friends pulled up on their snowmobiles. One of the fellas was riding a brand new machine and told us how fast it could go. One of my mates asked if he could take it for a rip. The owner obliged. My buddy flew down the lake at speeds I had never seen before, seemingly oblivious to the dangers he might encounter. He came back, unscathed, and exhilarated. But on the walk back into the shack, he stepped in a fishing hole, severely spraining an ankle and hitting his head on the ice which produced a bloody gash on his forehead. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/dmj-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1648064270259-bbm1'); s.setTargeting('URL', [win
