Washington apples aid in hurricane relief

Nearly 300,000 pounds of Washington apples are bound to aid people affected by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. Apples are an "easy, handheld fruit" that don't require immediate refrigeration, said Feeding the Northwest executive director Rod Wieber. "For a lot of folks that just don't have maybe electricity that are in remote areas, this can be dropped in or brought into them," he said. "That's an easy quick meal; somebody can have a snack or something. And it's one of the items that they're really asking for. Washington state grows some of the best apples in the nation."

Northwest winter wheat production up 23% over last year

Pacific Northwest wheat farmers planted 23% more winter wheat over last year, according to USDA's small grains summary. Planting is underway, the three top grain commission executives for the regions say. "Price has been very challenging, especially when coupled with the continued increase in input costs," Oregon Wheat CEO Amanda Hoey said. "However, the recent market demand and turnaround is beneficial."
