A Washington startup and a Montana refinery are turning captured carbon, cooking oil and animal fats into cleaner jet fuel that today’s airplanes can burn. Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, could shrink flying’s climate footprint, but the sector must scale up quickly and cut costs to supply the 20 billion gallons of jet fuel used annually in the U.S. alone.
