LabElite, the company offering the tests and claiming to have federal funding, had multiple tents in Center City last week. The company is based in Chicago.
“This winter looks like it could be very difficult,” said Health Commissioner Cheryl Bettigole. “We have to do something to slow the spread now before it’s too late.”
The city still has $20 million left to give from its new grant program meant to address the gun violence crisis. The Kenney administration hopes to do that by mid-November, a spokesperson said.
Council President Darrell L. Clarke opposed a measure to give Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration the power to approve streeteries. “We already have the authority to do that,” he said.
Coronavirus case rates remain much higher than earlier this summer and officials expressed concern about other new variants and lagging vaccination rates.
