Hanover School Division expanding mental health programs in respons...

The Hanover School Division is implementing a number of new programs following a noticeable increase in mental health issues since COVID. That’s according to Rod Kehler, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services. He says training current staff is an important step in handling these challenges. “We've got the two-day PD workshop that's primarily for many of our administrators, our school clinicians, our learning support teachers, our school guidance counsellors and that is the ASIST training which stands for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training.” Kehler says the goal of ASIST is to ensure staff feel confident and are able to support students who are struggling. He adds, “we also have a three-hour PD that helps individuals in spotting the warning signs for suicide and then helping those persons. That's called Safe Talk and that will be for many of our more peripheral staff. Our hope is to extend that out to educational assistance, even classroom teachers, school bus drivers, maintenance,

SAC promotes local artists with their annual Christmas Art Sale

The Steinbach Arts Council is helping to support and promote local artists with their annual Christmas Art Sale. Executive Director David Klassen says these local works of art make great gifts as they are very unique and personal. “We have a huge network of local artists that we work with on a regular basis here at the center, many of them are part of our buy or lease program, their artwork is out in the community, but a lot of people don't really know that they can purchase this artwork as well. We have a hall gallery that is full of artwork by locals, that is ready to be purchased and gifted to somebody that you really care about this year.” If you are interested, Klassen says you can visit the SAC website and take a look at the online catalog, but seeing it in person is certainly recommended. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/stol-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1648064325258-bbm1'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname])

Local tire shops see big surge in business following the first snow...

The dramatic shift in weather this week has local tire shops booked up, swapping vehicles over to winter tires. Chris Dyck from Kal Tire in Steinbach says they are as busy as they can possibly be right now. He notes generally speaking, it is a good idea to get winter tires on when the temperature is consistently below 7 degrees. “With that shift in the weather, that gets everyone up and going. We were enjoying such nice weather that no one was thinking about winter tire season, so everyone's all hands on deck now. We've had our little scare of winter weather as a start, so we are now well into keeping everyone safe on the road by getting their winters on.” Unfortunately, Dyck says this has resulted in fairly long lead times. “We have a couple options, so if you call in, we'll give you the best opportunities to get in as quickly as we can, but we are booking out a way in advance right now for getting your changeovers done.” googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googlet

Gifts of Light enhance local health care & brighten Steinbach’s hos...

People are already taking action to ensure the hospital grounds are as festive as ever, this December. Linda Peters is Executive Director with the Bethesda Foundation. She says that generous community members are already calling in to sponsor trees for this year’s Gifts of Light fundraising campaign. “It warms my heart to know people are thinking about the Bethesda Foundation, thinking about supporting healthcare in our community, and are thinking about honouring loved ones by sponsoring a tree.” Every year, the Bethesda Foundation hosts its Gifts of Light campaign. Funds raised go to purchase much-needed healthcare equipment for the Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach, and to enhance various healthcare services such as mental health supports or primary care supports. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/stol-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1648064325258-bbm1'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('pos
