There’s not much difference between teaching and performing as far as United Federation of Teachers member Gaspare Randazzo is concerned. “Stand in front of a classroom, stand in front of a stage, same thing to me,” said Randazzo, a history teacher at Susan Wagner High School on Staten Island for the past 13 years.

Activists gathered in Albany for the NYSUT Justice Conference in November, a first-ever joint meeting of the union’s Civil and Human Rights, LGBTQ+ and Women’s committees. The member activists gathered for a weekend filled with inspiration, and a shared commitment to uplift voices, celebrate diversity and advance social justice in communities statewide.

The local union partnered with the district to purchase and distribute Hershey’s chocolate bars custom wrapped with a thank you message for SRP Recognition Day.

Throngs of cheering phone bankers greeted Laura Gillen, Congressional District 4 candidate, at a rally in support of her campaign at the NYSUT regional office in Nassau on the second leg of the Long Island Common Ground Over Chaos bus tour in late October. It featured scores of NYSUT’s dedicated cohort of local retirees and in-service members, activists working tirelessly to get out the vote for the Nov. 5 election.

NYSUT’s Common Ground Over Chaos bus tour wound its way across Long Island recently and welcomed a special guest — American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten who joined NYSUT President Melinda Person, a slate of local activists and U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi for a roundtable discussion. The statewide union’s six-week bus tour across New York encourages candidates to sign its pledge to work across the aisle to pass legislation that benefits working Americans. The campaign continues through Nov. 5, Election Day.
