    Former Fort Gay officials plead guilty to embezzlement in agreements

    Former Fort Gay, West Virginia officials Joetta Hatfield and Sheila Bowen entered plea agreements on Sept. 26, 2025, each pleaded guilty to one count of felony embezzlement. Hatfield and Bowen were arrested Nov. 22, 2024, after being charged with felony fraudulent schemes, embezzlement, falsifying accounts, laundering through financial transactions and conspiracy (conspiracy to falsifying accounts), and were released after each posting a $25,000 bail. Hatfield’s agreement entails her pleading guilty to one count of felony embezzlement and paying $245,250 in restitution. In return, the state will dismiss the remaining counts and will not oppose a possible sentence of home confinement.
