A music school that’s changing lives in the Pembina Valley

Music has the power to bring people together, and that was the heart behind the Hymns of Hope concert hosted by the Douglas Kuhl School of Music (DKSM) at Emmanuel Mennonite Church in Winkler. The event featured students of all ages performing a variety of pieces, filling the space with harmony and inspiration. Carl Friesen, Chair of the DKSM Board of Directors, emphasized the school’s mission: “At the core of DKSM is the belief that music transforms lives and builds community. We work hard to provide an intergenerational space where students can develop their individual skills while learning to collaborate with others.” A performance filled with hope The concert, aptly named Hymns of Hope, was designed to offer encouragement to the community. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/pvol-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1648064209272-bbm1'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1648064209272]) s.addServ

Knipsbrat, quilts, and Mennonite hospitality: Salem Home’s crokinol...

Salem Home is inviting the community to join in on an evening of fun and friendly competition at its upcoming Crokinole Tournament on March 6th at 6:30 PM. While the game itself is sure to bring excitement, the heart of the event is about something much deeper—connecting the community with the residents of Salem Home. Building a sense of home “The main goal is to connect the community with the residents at Salem Home,” says Karin Oliviera, CEO of Salem Home. “We would like to have the community coming in and feeling like it’s grandma’s home, where they can come and visit, maybe have a cup of coffee with one of the residents, or play a game of Crokinole.” Salem Home has been working hard to create an environment that feels more like a home than an institution. “We have worked and continue to work on making it a home. You walk into Salem Home, and you don’t have the typical smell of a personal care home or a hospital. It smells like food—good food,” Oliviera explained. googletag.cmd.push(

They will ROCK you: Local talent brings Queen, Aerosmith & more to ...

The Back 40’s annual 70s Show is back with a powerhouse lineup of local musicians covering some of the most iconic bands of the decade. Featuring performances from Faces for Radio, The Committee, Link & The Moustaches, and many more, the highly anticipated show is set for Friday, February 21st, at the P.W. Enns Centennial Concert Hall. Scott Bell, representing the Back 40 committee, and a part of a number of the groups you'll see onstage, is excited about the band’s ambitious setlist this year. “I've always wanted to do a Queen set, and I think this is the first group of musicians I've played with where I was like, ‘We can do this. We’ve got the people to make it happen,’” Bell shares. With a unique twist, the band is incorporating a horn section into their Queen covers. “Queen with horns—it’s something different. And we’ve got some cool segues between songs, little extras that I think people are really going to enjoy,” Bell adds. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()
