Despite Mayor Bill de Blasio’s repeated vows to address the longstanding disparities, legalization advocates say the NYPD has continued to use drug stops as a tool for racist enforcement.
During the first half of this year, there were 47 fatal or near-fatal hit-and-run crashes on city streets, the highest total in any six month period since the NYPD started publishing records.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg says the scheme “negatively impacted our city’s minority- and women-owned business enterprises by denying them the chance to fairly compete for and secure the funding.”
