    Brown on track to double veteran undergraduate population by fall 2023

    Three years after promising to double its undergraduate student veteran population, the University has “nearly achieved” its goal, University Spokesperson Brian Clark wrote in an email to The Herald. On Veterans Day in 2019, the University announced that it aimed to double the undergraduate student veteran population, then 21 students, by 2024. The University also made veteran admissions need-blind, cut the standardized test score requirement and eliminated out-of-pocket admission costs for veterans.

    Rural Students at Brown aims to foster community, raise awareness

    A new student group, Rural Students at Brown, aims to foster a safe space for rural students admitted to the University. Spearheaded by Abby Bachenberg ’23 of Welcome, Minnesota; Toby Arment ’23 of Rawlins, Wyoming; Victoria Rose ’23 of Hillsboro, West Virginia and Jed Fox ’23 of Schoharie, New York, director of technology at The Herald, the organization hopes to be recognized as an official club by the Student Activities Office for the fall semester, according to Rose and Bachenberg.

    Admitted class of 2026 students reflect on in-person ADOCH

    A sea of admitted students clad in red lanyards and drawstring bags visited Brown on Friday for the Class of 2026’s first in-person admitted students’ day, also known as A Day on College Hill. 280 admitted students and 889 total attendees — including parents and family — visited College Hill for ADOCH on Friday, according to Dean of Admission Logan Powell. 317 students and 1,007 overall guests are registered for the second day on April 13, while 430 admitted students and 1,349 total guests are registered for April 22.

    In-person ADOCH to return for class of 2026

    The University will host three days of the annual A Day on College Hill event in person for the class of 2026 on April 8, 13 and 22, Dean of Admission Logan Powell wrote in an email to The Herald. This year’s ADOCH marks the first time the event has featured in-person activities since 2019.

    Guido Imbens MA’89 PhD’91 speaks at Lemley Lecture

    Students, parents and University faculty crowded into the Salomon Center on Wednesday to listen to a lecture from the 2021 Co-recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences Guido Imbens MA’89 PhD’91. Imbens won the prize for his work with Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Joshua Angrist on “methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships.” He was chosen as the speaker for this semester’s Lemley Lecture, which invites “exceptional leaders who are preeminent in their field” to the University.

    Congressional bill proposes banning legacy admissions

    A first-of-its-kind bill that proposes an effective ban on legacy admissions in higher education was introduced in Congress earlier this month, according to a press release from Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR).  The Fair College Admissions for Students Act was introduced by Merkley and Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY16) on Feb. 2 as a proposed amendment to the Higher Education Act of 1965. The bill would prevent institutions of higher education that participate in federal student aid programs from awarding admission preference to students with pre-existing connections to the school or students whose families are donors.

    Diman, Sayles flood due to pipe issues

    Buildings on different corners of campus — Andrews Hall, Diman House and Sayles Hall — flooded over the weekend and on Monday. But, according to the University, the causes of flooding have all been resolved. Zandy Swartzman ’24, a resident of Diman House, said he and his friends were extremely confused after being woken up by the alarm. “It really did look like a scene from the Titanic,” he said. “Just water spewing down.”

    Brown sees record applicant pool for class of 2026

    The University received a record-high number of applications for the class of 2026, with a combined 50,608 applicants from both the early and regular decision pools, Dean of Admission Logan Powell told The Herald. Powell noted that applications rose in every category, every geographic region and every area of academic focus. He credited the University’s presence during the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of both in-person and virtual outreach, and, to a lesser extent, increased financial aid offerings, for the rise in applications.

    Steiner receives physics Ph.D from Brown at age 89

    At that point already a grandfather, Steiner took one or two classes a semester until he accrued the over 20 required credits necessary for graduate school, and then decided to pursue a Ph.D. in physics. This September, after a roughly 20 year journey toward his most recent degree, Steiner successfully defended his thesis at 89 years old after pushing through multiple medical setbacks.
