Trump had just been elected with a promise to save coal jobs and pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate accord. Climate activists were deeply distraught then, as now. I wrote in 2016, “Reading the news Wednesday morning was like waking up from a nightmare to discover that there really is a guy coming after you with a meat cleaver.”
