Kerr tells Congress to call out Trump's 'racist tweets' - SFGATE

President Trump’s Sunday morning tweets directed at four minority congresswomen, saying they should “go back” to their countries even though three of them were born in the U.S., were met with a loud silence from Republicans in Washington. Which didn’t go unheard by Warriors coach Steve Kerr.Kerr, a vocal Trump critic, fired back at the president Sunday night with a tweet [https://twitter.com/SteveKerr/status/1150600554353008641] imploring Congress to react: “Come on members of Congress, call out…

America's 'best known and best loved' chef ran a world-famous Armen...

The chef who brought shish kebab to America escaped from a Turkish prison first. Somehow, George Mardikian channeled the pain and hunger from his survival of genocide: He went from a dishwasher to a world-famous San Francisco restaurant owner who won the Presidential Medal of Freedom and dedicated his life to feeding people. All of this he did with a smile. Omar Khayyam’s — an Armenian restaurant with elegant Middle Eastern decor named after an epicurean Persian poet — was destination dining for…

Chamath Palihapitiya, a billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist and part-owner of the Golden State Warriors, attempted to backtrack from recent comments he made that “nobody cares,” including himself, about the ongoing Uyghur genocide in China. The subject came up on Palihapitiya’s “All-In Podcast,” when co-host Jason Calacanis praised President Joe Biden’s condemnation of the human rights abuses inflicted by the Chinese government, including genocide and forced labor in the northwest regio…

Burning Man 'exodus' finally begins in Black Rock Desert - SFGATE

LATEST Sept. 4, 2:25 p.m. The “exodus” from Burning Man has finally begun after rainy conditions turned Black Rock Desert into a quagmire. The driving ban was lifted at 2 p.m. Monday, opening the metaphorical flood gates for 64,000 burners to make the drive back to civilization. “Please know that while conditions are improving and roads are drying, the playa is still muddy and may be difficult to navigate in some neighborhoods and down certain streets,” Burning Man organizers wrote in a stateme…

His work is all over SF. But this secret society head is now forgot...

Anyone can see his art up close at some of San Francisco’s most popular landmarks, even 73 years after his death. Outside the city, there’s one notorious exception only the most privileged can visit. The life of Haig Patigian is a fantastic, complicated and surprisingly forgotten one. An Armenian immigrant who escaped genocide as a child and lost three of his siblings and his son to illness, he went from earning $11 a week at a San Francisco newspaper to earning a $15,000 commission to sculpt a…

'George Lucas Talk Show' goes off the rails at SF Sketchfest - SFGATE

At the “George Lucas Talk Show,” creator and Lucas impersonator Connor Ratliff slammed yet another cup of Skywalker Vineyards pinot noir while pacing the San Francisco stage. The drinking was heavy enough to concern even one of the most reprehensible characters in “Star Wars” history. “How many glasses of wine have you had?” asked Watto — or rather the comedian who pretends to be Watto — with the same ill-conceived Middle Eastern-ish accent as “The Phantom Menace” character. “Your demeanor has c…
