On May 1, 2025, after a monthslong search, Robert W. Jones, BBA ’87, Life Member, officially became the new CEO of the Texas Exes. After a high-profile career in public affairs, most notably at Pfizer, and spending a lot of time in New York City and Washington, D.C., he will spend this next chapter of his life back where it all started for him, right here on the Forty Acres. If you’ve never traveled to South America—and most of our group had not—it’s nearly impossible to understand the vertical expanse of Chile.

When you are a new student at The University of Texas, your freshly minted student ID in hand, the sprawling campus is most easily navigated via acronym. On the digital, searchable map, the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art is “BMA.” The Jackson Geological Sciences Building is “JGB.” And what was formerly the “SAC,” or…

When the 2020 class of Distinguished Alumni of The University of Texas took the
stage on Nov. 12, 2021, and put on their burnt-orange jackets for the very first
time, it had been a long time coming. Since 1958, these awards have been an
annual occasion. Longhorns who have made a name for themselve…

On any given group travel excursion, whether by motor coach, ferry, train, or plane, there are scores of excited faces staring out the windows—watching every hill or ancient ruin pass them by. And it never fails that elsewhere on that vehicle, there is someone hunched over a notepad or phone, ignoring the scenery they’ve seen…

When we asked travelers to send us their favorite photos from past trips, submissions poured into the Flying Longhorns Facebook page. Beautiful vistas, ancient cities, charming villages, and astonishing wildlife were filling up our feed—and we realized how long it had been since we’d seen these kinds of images streaming in from around the globe.…

This fall, two Longhorns will enter the McCombs School of Business with a unique support system. Todd Maclin, BBA ’78, Life Member, a retired executive with a storied career at JPMorgan Chase, along with his wife and children, has created a Texas Exes scholarship designed to give Black students from the Dallas/Fort Worth area access to the personal and professional network the family has built together. Motivated by the distressing news cycle and national conversation about race, the Maclins started talking last summer about what they could do to help. The result was an endowment large

One thing you notice in the bustling town of Arusha, Tanzania, the tourism hub where most of the country’s luxury safari companies are headquartered, are the schoolchildren along the side of the main road. Groups of youngsters in matching uniforms walk on the shoulder of the busy thoroughfare, which is packed with jeeps and whizzing…

When the news broke last November, it was noted that Chuck Harris, BBA ’86, Life Member, would be only the seventh person to serve as executive director of the Texas Exes in its 132-year history. That’s a small club. Harris comes to the association from the financial services industry, where he was the president of…

After graduating from UT, Tessie Crow saw a business opportunity and took gameday style to the next level. Tessie Crow’s first week of school at Louisiana State University could have gone better. It was the same week in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated the region. And just a few weeks later, Hurricane Rita wreaked havoc…

You don’t know me, but I know you. I’ve been the managing editor of the Alcalde for the past four years, and now I have come out from behind my cubicle to address you directly. Don’t be alarmed. I was recently named editor-in-chief after my friend and colleague, Tim Taliaferro, set sail for Texas Monthly. We miss him dearly, but he left a mark on this magazine that is sacred to the journalists and designers who work on it every day. It was one word, breathlessly squiggled with a black felt-tip pen in the margins of our stories and in the center of our working lives—YES! That’s how he cheered

Talking to a multifaceted Forty Acres Scholar At the University of Texas at Austin, there are artists who stare at the horizon, researchers who never leave the lab, and self-starters who will probably be CEOs before they graduate. Bronwyn Scott, a junior from Houston who is triple-majoring in biochemistry, history, and Plan II honors, is all of these people rolled into one. As a Forty Acres Scholar, she is using her background in medical research and her artistic spirit to question everything. I heard somewhere that you taught yourself French at a young age. Can you tell me about that? My
