Bill McColl, a standout athlete at Hoover High School who went on to star in football at Stanford and for the Chicago Bears before becoming an orthopedic surgeon, died Dec. 28 at his La Jolla home. He was 93. McColl earned All-CIF honors at Hoover in football, baseball and basketball.
