Uchucklesaht plans to build much-needed housing units in Port Alberni

A former school play field should soon be teeming with children again, now that the City of Port Alberni has approved construction of apartments and townhouses behind Uchucklesaht’s Nucii Building on Redford Street. The Uchucklesaht Tribe Government purchased the former Redford Elementary School in 2018. They renovated the facility, turning it into office and meeting spaces. The playing field behind the property has remained unused for years.

Coastal communities brace for massive storm

Residents in Port Alberni woke up to a light dusting of wet snow on the morning of Nov. 19. Other than the weather forecasts, there was no hint that a freight train of a storm is set to hit coastal British Columbia in a few hours. The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness issued a bulletin advising residents to prepare for stormy weather that is expected to continue through to Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Doctor shortage forces cutback in hours at Port Alberni walk-in clinic

The extremely busy walk-in clinic in Port Alberni announced that it has been forced to reduce its hours for a period of one month due to a doctor shortage.  According to a recent post on the Mapleway (sic) Medical Center Facebook page, “from October 10, 2024 until November 12, 2024, the urgent care opening hours will be drastically reduced due to lack of medical doctors.”
