Third in a series As one who devotes much attention to the passage of time and the lessons of history, Jim Nantz has had much to ponder on the road to his last NCAA Final Four as a play-by-play announcer. The Final Four has been a Nantz family affair for decades. His parents and his sister’s family were regular guests, and his daughter Caroline, 28, was less than a year old when she attended her first Final Four in 1995. Their annual tradition has been to stand arm in arm on the court after the…

The Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday that Astros owner Jim Crane can proceed with a 2013 lawsuit against former Astros owner Drayton McLane. The suit stems from Crane’s purchase of the failed Comcast SportsNet Houston regional sports network from McLane in 2011. The court by a 7-2 margin ruled that McLane did not enjoy the protection of the Texas Citizens Participation Act in his negotiations with Crane’s Houston Baseball Partners group for the sale of the Astros and the ballclub’s stake in CSN…

With their season on the line Monday night at Minute Maid Park, the inconceivable setback that couldn’t possibly happen again to the Astros … well, it happened again. By losing 11-4 to the Texas Rangers in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, dropping the series four games to three, the Astros duplicated their inglorious distinction from the 2019 World Series of losing four home games during a best-of-seven playoff series. The Astros’ season is over, as is their goal of reaching a…

With the debut of Space City Home Network, the Astros and Rockets will once again reap the bright promises but also the thorny challenges that come with ownership in the rapidly changing world of regional sports network television. On this weekend 50 years ago, Earl Campbell came to Houston for the first time. In the hearts and minds of many who watched him that day and continued to do so over the next decade, he’s never left. Campbell was born and raised in Tyler and has lived most of the last 40 years in Austin, but he remains a vital part of Houston’s collective memory. He played 55 football games in Houston from 1973 through 1984 on the road to becoming one of 11 Texans enshrined by the Texas High School Football Hall…
