Did you happen to catch the Goldman head honcho on Charlie Rose the other night? If so, were you thinking to yourself, “This guy is totally gonna run for office one day?” So were we. And the truth is, despite being a half-billionaire (his net worth was reported to be $450 million two years ago), a face of the financial meltdown, and a prime Occupy Wall Street target—they even picketed the guy’s 15 Central Park West pad—he still managed to come off as rather relatable. We could actually see him…

Last month, Time published a list of the 10 Richest Towns in America, crowning Short Hills, New Jersey, number one. Darien, Connecticut; Chappaqua, New York; and Fairfax Station, Virginia also made the cut. Notably absent, to the consternation of their residents: Greenwich, Connecticut; Beverly Hills; and Manhattan, to name a few.
Here’s the thing: the Time list was based on the percentage of households in a zip code that make over $150,000. Which is, of course, merely the price of an average…

Two summers ago we learned a valuable lesson: Charity, even if it doesn’t involve kittens or a Buzzfeed quiz, can go viral. The Ice Bucket Challenge— with its Facebook ubiquity, its popularity with stars from Bill Gates to Benedict Cumberbatch, and its $115 million raised for ALS—was all the proof we needed. So when Louis Vuitton decided to partner with UNICEF, LV CEO Michael Burke knew that the Silver Lockit bracelet and pendant his company was creating for the campaign was only part of the eq…

Eton is known for its rigorous academics and notable alumni, including 19 British prime ministers, actors such as Eddie Redmayne, Damian Lewis, and Tom Hiddleston, and the future king of England. But attending the English boys’ boarding school is also, apparently, a way to get access to the Kremlin. Eleven Etonians had a private, two-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin there last week, the Guardian reports. Securing an audience with the controversial leader is not an easy task (…

As one nepo baby recently demonstrated, the connections forged in cabins are intense, mysterious, and totally worth getting grounded over.

I wrote this story on a flight that was initially booked to take my family to Maui. We ultimately changed our plans, in response to the historically destructive wildfire that had devastated the island two weeks earlier. At press time tourists were being encouraged to visit other Hawaiian islands, but feelings were split about their presence on Maui. Regardless of when tourism returns to normal levels, it will be far longer before Maui and its people heal, and the scars will last forever. Keep re…

There’s a scene in the 1991 Steve Martin film Father of the Bride when the eponymous bride breaks down in tears upon being given a blender by her betrothed. Now, a good blender is nothing to sneeze at—many of us would be thrilled to receive a Vitamix A3500. But in this case the appliance did not stimulate the pleasure centers of her particular brain. Sure, some gifts are straightforward (he needs a new raincoat; she collects perfume bottles), but most gifts—the best—are about more than just the…

Gstaad, Vail, Cortina… Windham? One of these things is not like the others—yet. As many of Slim Aaron’s most famous photos attest, the ski glitterati from around the globe can be found scattered among a handful of resorts in the Rockies and the Alps. The Catskills? Not so much. And while “Aspen East” is a bit of an inside joke for devotees of Windham—a 3,100-foot, 54-trail mountain above an eponymous rural town featuring a pizzeria, a BBQ joint, and several dive bars—change is indeed afoot. Loca…

In the powder room of my home you will find a litmus test of sorts. Mounted above the toilet, directly in the sightline of anyone entering, there are two felt collages by the artist Sam Sidney, one of Larry David and one of Leon Black, David’s unlikely housemate on his HBO show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, played by the actor J.B. Smoove. Now, if a guest says nothing, one can assume nothing—perhaps she despises Larry David’s brand of humor, or is unfamiliar with it, or even likes it but thinks it’s a…

Deep in the throes of pandemic life, a Manhattan mother of two whom I’ll call Amy was flailing in a way many Manhattan, and American, mothers were at that time. “It was during Covid that I realized I could not parent,” she confesses. “I didn’t really have rules. I was yelling a lot. I didn’t know when to give in and when not to give in. I felt like I wasn’t doing a good job.”Friends began sending her Instagram reels of parenting experts like the ubiquitous Dr. Becky Kennedy and other proponents…
