    Canadian cereals industry leads in sustainability, new reports show

    Cereals Canada has released a series of sustainability reports for Canadian non-durum wheat, durum wheat, barley, and oats to demonstrate how the cereals value chain is meeting the challenge of sustainable cereal production. “Canada is a global leader in the production of high-quality, nutritious, and sustainable cereal grains,” said Mark Walker, vice-president of markets and trade. “These reports confirm that Canadian farmers grow some of the most sustainable crops in the world.” The reports were developed by Cereals Canada using a set of six environmental sustainability indicators, including carbon footprint, soil organic carbon, fertilizer use, irrigation, pesticide use, and soil erosion, comparing Canadian cereal production with that of other major cereal-producing countries, including Australia, France, Italy, Sweden, and the United States. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/dmj-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1648064270259-bbm1');

    Sugar shortage impacting holiday baking plans

    A sugar shortage across Western Canada is impacting holiday baking plans. White and brown sugar has been hard to come by, as 138 workers at Rogers Sugar in British Columbia walked off the job in late-September. The Vancouver refinery is the largest in Western Canada. Workers are looking to keep their Monday to Friday eight-hour shifts, instead of working 12-hour shifts and also having to work weekends. The Moose Jaw Co-op Food Store is feeling the pinch as customers look to get a head start on Christmas baking.
