What is happening with the 134-acre Montpelier-owned Country Club Road property? The property has been eyed as the spot for new housing, recreation, and community uses, but a plan has never been formally approved, according to City Planning and Community Development Director Mike Miller during the March 12 city council meeting.  Montpelier’s City Council — with two newly elected members following Town Meeting Day — still did not have answers, but councilors unanimously agreed to formally seek public requests for proposals from developers and community members. They amended the motion to include a deadline to open the proposals during the

Responding to an initial report of a “distressed male covered in blood” on Berlin Street, police later arrested four underage people at the scene and caught a fifth juvenile driving away from the address. Voters have spoken during Barre City’s annual town meeting on May 13, resulting in a few changes on the city council.  The results for the two-way race to fill the open seat in Ward 1 vacated by Emel Cambel were that Beth Hilgartner beat out Eddie Rousse 201 to 172. Incumbent Ward 2 Councilor Jeff Bergeron won his spot unopposed with 162 to 14 (write-in) votes, and incumbent Samn Stockwell lost her seat by 14 votes to Don Routhier, 110 to 124.  Voters approved Article 1 to authorize a general fund budget of $14,800,120, of which, an amount not to

Council Asks DPW to Revise State Street Construction Plan, Again

Phase I of the (estimated) $7.2 million East State Street reconstruction project in Montpelier is set to start this summer, but some major details are being settled three years after voters approved the original plan in 2022. For example, the original concept included a dedicated bike path, which would have required widening the roadway.  But following public input on April 23, the city council asked the director of the Department of Public Works Kurt Motyka to remove the bike path and come back with a new presentation with a continuous sidewalk on the north side of the street. And following

City Council Advances City Plan Toward Final Approval

The Montpelier City Plan has been moved another step forward toward completion. The city council agreed to amend the plan after accepting input from previous public hearings during its June 11 meeting. After making note of amended language, formatting, and color coding per suggestions received in writing and orally during public hearings, Planning Director Mike Miller said the document would then go to the Planning Commission for review before coming back to the city council for final adoption.  However, one main quibble remained unsettled among city councilors: whether the official copy would be the digital web-based version or a print

Local Independence Day Celebrations Nearly Here

These celebrations often also include used book sales, strawberry shortcake, ice cream, and arts and crafts exhibits as well. History Corner: Remembering a Vermont Portraitist

A Vermont woman painted one of the few portraits of a female legislator that hangs in the Statehouse in Montpelier. Ruth Mould, who lived from 1894 through 1979, and worked for a time with the Montpelier School District, was a painter and portraitist. Mould painted Edna Beard to commemorate Beard’s accomplishments of winning a seat in the House of Representatives in 1921 (the year a woman’s right to vote was ratified in Vermont), followed by winning a seat in the Senate in 1923. That portrait still hangs in the Statehouse. Mould also painted three Vermont Supreme Court justices, a bobby soxer,

Sparks Fly Amid City Plan Adoption; Divided Council Nixes Naming Ro...

By Carla Occaso A city employee, two citizens, and a city councilor had rough words for one another July 9, but in the end, the city plan passed in a 5-to-1 vote.  The Montpelier City Council held its final public hearing to discuss the plan, which has been in the works since 2017, but brewing tensions boiled over before the final vote. First, Peter Kelman, a citizen who lives on Mountain View Street, spoke as he has done during multiple meetings on this topic. “I have spent more time on this plan than any of you,” he said to the
