Jodie Foster, Colman Domingo join short list of LGBTQ Oscar nominees - NBC News

Straight actors have a long history of being recognized by the Academy Awards for playing gay characters, but the list of openly LGBTQ actors who have had such recognition is much shorter. This year, however, Colman Domingo and Jodie Foster have joined that exclusive club. Domingo received a nomination for best actor in a leading role for playing the title character in “Rustin,” Netflix’s biopic about the gay Black civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, an adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. and the a…

Kristen Stewart and ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ co-star on bringing lesbia...

“Love Lies Bleeding,” starring Kristen Stewart as a gym manager besotted with a wayward female bodybuilder, is neither for the prudish nor the faint of heart. Set in the late 1980s in an unnamed Southwestern locale, the gritty, bloody anti-romance could arguably be described as a cross between “Thelma and Louise” and “Natural Born Killers.” The soul-crushing power of love — both romantic and familial — is a theme woven throughout the film, which debuts Friday. The central characters, Lou (Stew…

A Roman Catholic high school in Charlotte, North Carolina, did not violate federal civil rights law by firing a gay teacher after he announced that he would marry his same-sex partner, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday, overturning a lower court ruling. Lonnie Billard, a longtime teacher at Charlotte Catholic High School, shared a post on Facebook in 2014, shortly after the state legalized same-sex marriage, saying that he and his partner were engaged. He was fired several weeks later. Bi…

In the newly dropped trailer for the Max comedy “Am I OK?” Dakota Johnson’s character, Lucy, laments, “I’m 32 years old; I should have figured this out by now.” What Lucy is seemingly figuring out, albeit later than some, is her sexuality. The revelation that she’s a lesbian appears to come as a surprise to Lucy, but not to her best friend, Jane (Sonoya Mizuno). When Lucy asks her friend if she ever suspected her to be gay, Jane replies, “You did want a Volvo in high school.” Lucy responds, in…
