LAPORTE — A 21-year-old remained behind bars early Monday after allegedly battering a younger female and crashing their vehicle early Saturday, according to LaPorte County police.

With the assistance of Merrillville police, the accused was taken into custody in the 1300 block of 83rd Avenue in Merrillville, according to police.

"Detectives believe there are numerous other victims and counties affected by this criminal operation."

"Firearms-related fatalities have claimed the lives of 52 officers in 2024, which represents a 13% increase from the 46 officers killed by gunfire in 2023 and was the leading cause of death," officials said.

"Any property owner in violation of our nuisance property ordinance faces a fine ranging from $2,500 to $7,500 per occurrence," police said.

"Phishing scams are designed to create a sense of panic, catching the receiver off guard and causing them to react before thinking," officials said.

The accused was paid $94,339, but gave repeated excuses why he could not complete the project, the homeowner said.

A search revealed a 9mm handgun under the front passenger seat, which police said was reported stolen out of Michigan City.
