OUR FIRST AND LAST LOVE, LYLE ASHTON HARRIS, QUEENS MUSEUM, - Dazed

Longer days and a load of openings. It’s almost June. And this month’s shows will give you plenty to think about while you’re basking in the sun (or rain, depending on where you are in the world). From Adam Rouhana’s portrayal of Palestinian life at London’s TJ Boulting and Lyle Ashton Harris’s powerful exploration of race and gender at NYC’s Queens Museum, to Simone Leigh’s deep dive into Black femme subjectivity at LA’s LACMA and CAAM and the radical global modernism of mumok’s avant-garde sho…

Art shows to leave the house for in May 2024

May’s shows serve as a reminder of a world in flux. Across continents, artists grapple with the complexities of identity, solidarity, and resistance, weaving together forgotten histories and collective memories. In New York, Arthur Jafa examines the nuances of Black existence by combining the personal, political and indust…

From feminist activism and protest at the South London Gallery to a touring exhibition by the Hayward Gallery examining working-class photographers and their communities after the fall of communism in Europe. Elsewhere, there’s a refusal to be defined by oppression, as we see in Languid Hand’s curated film programme from the Black diaspora or overlooked, such as Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Soulscapes, which aims to expand the gen…

Amber Pinkerton’s most personal work yet

Pinkerton’s a-ha moment came when she took an alternative processes workshop hosted by the school’s fine art department. “I was always going to the fine art department after that,” she laughs. “(A cyanotype is) very painterly, it makes me feel more connected as an artist. It’s like putting some ingrained stamp of myself on it. Maybe, subconsciously, it’s self-preservation.” The works in Hard Food are framed in mahogany, a solid and stable material marked for its beauty and durability. Historical…
