A shooting Tuesday night at Wawa on 1007 E. University Ave. left one man dead.  At about 9 p.m., Gainesville Police Department officers responded to the gas station about a person being shot. Wallace Lee, a Gainesville resident, was found by officers lying on the ground with what looked like a gunshot wound to the head. 

Mackenzie Mullen and an unidentified student — two UF students — were involved in hit-and-runs last week. Mullen had serious injuries, and the other student was killed. 

A UF student was hit and killed by a truck at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday while walking on the sidewalk along Southwest 34th Street.  The driver, 19-year-old James O’Reilly, fled the scene after hitting the student on the 3600 block of Southwest 34th Street. 

A female UF student was hit on her scooter near University Park Arboretum Thursday evening.  A car heading east on West University Avenue turned left onto Northwest 23rd Street and hit the unidentified student just after 6 p.m. in the opposite lane.

Gainesville Fire Rescue soon confirmed that it was only heavy smoke due to a malfunctioning compressor, GFR Assistant Fire Chief Stephen Hesson said. 

A Gainesville woman’s car was stolen Thursday morning at around 7 a.m. with her toddler in the back seat.  Her car was stolen off of Southwest 35th Place and found about 40 minutes later with her unharmed child still inside.

For around a month, UF students Jeremiah Gu, Luke Morris and Mitch Valdes’ cash and food was disappearing. The three roommates began to find themselves in what they describe as a roommate nightmare.  Once their cash and food started disappearing, the roommates suspected their 26-year-old roommate Kody Moniz was responsible for the thefts from video camera footage. After kicking him out, they discovered Moniz’s criminal record.

The pair planned to rob a neighbor’s apartment, according to the arrest report. When the neighbor’s friend confronted him, an argument broke out.

Gainesville Fire Rescue crews arrived at Kid City USA at 1127 NW Seventh Ave., about eight minutes after a fire alarm system notification at 3:45 a.m., according to a GFR press release.
