Ford announced today that it is sunsetting its Model E dealer certification program, effective July 1. The program was announced on September 14th, 2022, and officially began on Jan. 1 of this year. While the automaker’s goal was to better compete with EV startups by requiring dealers to invest in charging stations, training, customer education and no-haggle pricing before they could sell EVs, Ford’s dealers went full-throttle in their opposition to it—and even filed lawsuits over the plan. Ins…

I have to admit, when I first saw the Tesla Cybertruck I was surprised and even a little confused, but definitely not a fan of the look. I was actually in China with NIO when Elon Musk revealed the vehicle and for a minute I thought he was kidding and the real Cybertruck would then roll out on stage.
But over time my opinion changed. Once I got home from the trip and had time to look at it more closely, I thought “It’s not as bad as my initial impressions”. A little while later my feelings evolv…

Love or hate them, automobile dealerships aren’t going anywhere in the US. The strict dealership laws and the powerful dealer lobby behind them all but guarantee that the established brands won’t be able to offer direct-to-consumer sales anytime soon. Meanwhile, the dealer’s job of understanding and explaining how the vehicles work has been getting more and more difficult as the tech inside the cars advances. Then add the fact that more and more alternative fuel vehicles are showing up on the l…

The most important decision an electric vehicle owner needs to make—after choosing which EV to buy, of course—is which home charger is the best for their needs. If you’re currently trying to figure out which EV charger is the best, you’ve come to the right place. What you’re about to read is a little different from the average “Best EV Chargers” list you might find on any EV publication or tech website, which often just aggregates reviews from other sources without doing any independent testing…

After a few years of delays, the Tesla Cybertruck has finally landed on planet Earth. So what’s the first thing I want to do with every new EV? The InsideEVs 70 MPH Highway Range Test, of course. And that’s exactly what I did this week when I rented an all-wheel-drive Foundation Series Cybertruck on Turo. The vehicle had a little over 2,000 miles on the odometer and was completely stock, with no aftermarket accessories that could affect the results. Tesla Foundation Serie…

With the stroke of a pen, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has unplugged the state’s pro-electric-vehicle position, signing into law a new EV road tax that is the highest of its kind in the nation. Starting in July, New Jersey EV owners must pay an annual $250 road tax fee in an effort to offset the state’s loss in fuel tax revenue. The new fee will increase by $10 each of the next four years until it reaches $290 in 2028. To make matters worse, New Jersey requires buyers and leases of all new v…

By the end of 2024, Lucid Motors expects to begin delivering its second offering, an all-electric SUV called the Gravity. I was recently invited to check out a pre-production copy at a small private Lucid event at the Classic Car Club in Manhattan. While I was expecting to capture some unique content on the vehicle, I wasn’t expecting Lucid’s CEO and CTO, Peter Rawlinson, to show up unexpectedly and invite me to hop into the vehicle for a 20-minute one-on-one conversation about the Gravity, th…

It wasn’t long ago that the software in your car was merely an afterthought; something that rarely affected a purchasing decision much less the vehicle’s driving dynamics. Those days are gone. Software has become such an integral part of just about every facet of today’s vehicles that the term “software-defined vehicle” has emerged and is currently used throughout the industry. Rivian is one of the companies that operate on the cutting edge of software development as the electric vehicle start…
