Congress passed a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown in mid-March, amid a partisan fight over federal spending. That continuing resolution left out tens of millions of dollars in funding for Southwest and Southside community projects.

In a trip back to Damascus to check on storm repairs, U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine called what’s been accomplished “impressive."

Eleven counties are included in the request. A declaration from the president would open up access to federal funding for recovery efforts.

The city council will consider an ordinance banning the devices during its Tuesday night meeting.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin made the request to President Donald Trump on Feb. 16. A disaster declaration for Kentucky — where 22 people were killed —was approved Monday.

The legislation, which was requested by Bristol officials contending with the burned-out Virginia Intermont campus, will help “fight the blight,” the city manager said.

The $23 million hotel was expected to open in March, but S&D Hotel wants to extend the date to Sept. 30.

The board will consider whether to extend the county’s state of emergency.

Proposed legislation would allow the city to sell the former campus, while giving it more control over the process. It would also apply to the city’s other blighted properties.

The possible censure would come three weeks after Councilman Michael Pollard posted a public apology for lying about the city manager and violating the ethics code.
