Authorities on Tuesday identified an armed man who was shot by North Little Rock policeMonday evening. Arkansas State Police said in a news release that Anthony Brown, 18, is accused of brandishing a gun after officers stopped a vehicle in the area of Main Street and Pershing Avenue about 6:35 p. m. Brown allegedly got out of the vehicle, fled on foot and showed the weapon. Authorities said that’s when an officer shot Brown.

Arkansas on Wednesday reported 1,703 new cases of COVID-19 as a surge in infections continued. Active cases increased by 301 to 15,801. Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Tuesday officially called for a special legislative session to lift a ban on school mask mandates. The session will focus on Act 1002, a law the Republican governor signed earlier this year that prohibits state and local mask mandates. Hutchinson said he wants to amend the law to allow schools to decide their own mask policies. He said he’s concerned about children under age 12 who aren’t old enough to get vaccinated.
