Bernard Coffindaffer, a native of Craigsville, Nicholas County, West Virginia, began erecting sets of three crosses in September 1984. The first set was in Flatwoods, Braxton County, West Virginia. Following a heart surgery, Coffindaffer said he was called by God to do it. Thousands of sets later, Coffindaffer was bankrupt and died in October 1993 at 68.

Drought, gusty winds bring increased wildfire risk to state

The National Weather Service issued an increased fire danger statement for most of the state on Thursday cautioning that wind gusts of 15-20 miles per hour and relative humidity readings in the 20s and 30s would increase wildfire potential across the area, and could cause existing wildfires to spread. The statement was in effect through 8 p.m. on Thursday.
