CARY, N.C. — Marshall men’s soccer coach Chris Grassie found the silver lining on Monday.

Marshall and Vermont battled for the NCAA men’s soccer College Cup championship through regulation and into overtime Monday night, when the Catamounts got the game-winner by Maximillian Kissel to claim the national title, 2-1. The golden goal at 94:53 ended the Herd’s bid for a second national crown that would have followed the 2020 season championship, also won at Cary’s WakeMed Soccer Park, site of Monday’s title game.

Throughout the 2023 football season, Nitro had to rely on its high-powered offense to compensate for a defense that yielded 40 points to their opponents three times. That hasn't been the case in 2024 with that unit playing as strong as the team's offense.
