The same poll found that only 25 percent believed religious leaders should tell their members which candidates and policies to vote for, and the rest opposed that practice.

Data from as far back as October 2021 — when sales prices were higher than now — are influencing the tax rate almost a year later, forcing cultivators to pay effective tax rates that can be double what the Legislature intended.

“I knew people were suffering and we were trying everything we could do to help them as quickly as we can and we felt like we’re fighting … a civil war at the same time,” Gaa said.

The outgoing governor announced highlights less than two weeks before he leaves office. The state’s Economic Forum projected earlier this month that the state will bring in $11.4 billion in tax revenue in the next two-year budget cycle.
