City in a Garden: Queer Art and Activism in Chicago is an intergenerational group exhibition that highlights Chicago’s essential, yet often underacknowledged, role in the story of queer art and activism. The exhibition examines this history from the mid-1980s, when activists radically mobilized in response to the US government’s disastrous handling of the AIDS crisis. In this moment of change, activists reclaimed the historically pejorative epithet “queer” as a liberatory term, encompassing all who purposefully deviate from heteronormative society. Drawn from the MCA’s collection and other local collections, City in a Garden follows this paradigm shift in LGBTQ+ history by bringing together work from over 30 artists and collectives working in Chicago from the 1980s to the present.

The history of wine is often narrated through generational dynasties, stoic family names, and long-held, frequently rigid, traditions. It's a world that, until recently, rarely celebrated—or even acknowledged—diversity. Yet, beneath the surface of the world’s most celebrated regions, a quiet but profound revolution has been brewing. Today, a wave of dynamic, openly LGBTQ+ winemakers and winery owners are not just claiming their space in the cellar; they are redefining quality, challenging conventional wisdom, and crafting some of the most exciting and authentic wines on the planet.

Fire Island is considered a safe haven for queer and marginalized communities, but its hidden and often complicated history deserves acknowledgement, too. Pamela Sneed and Carlos Martiel seek to tell the little-known stories of black resistance and resilience on the Island through Sacred and Profane, an expansive and informative exhibition featuring new works including poetry and mixed-media collages that uncover haunting and historical narratives that have remained mostly untold until now. Sneed’s research and pieces appear in tandem with Martiel’s Cuerpo (2022), Custody (2025), Gran Poder (2023), as well as a fresh performance co-created alongside his mother titled No Resurrection, which documents the widespread grief and shock experienced by African American parents and their children who’ve been victimized by police violence.
