100-mile race. She hasn’t finished in more than a decade, but she’s lining up
again.
Last year, the ultramarathon governing body dumped many multiday races from
their catalog. So a group of fringe runners created their own championship, and
just kept running.
Backyard ultramarathons are grueling, hourslong races. The international team
competition, held on Oct. 15, included runners from dozens of nations racing on
their home turf, including Ukraine.
Yasuhiro Makoshi, 70, is a fixture of New York’s food and running scenes. On
Nov. 6, he’ll be running his 36th New York City Marathon, his first as a
visitor.
