The UF Board of Trustees, who govern the state’s flagship university, put in place policies Thursday that bolster their authority over key decisions on top-level hiring decisions. The new measures include strict rules that could allow for a cut on spending out of the president’s office.

UF officially began its search for a new president, a process expected to stretch over several months and involve intense scrutiny from stakeholders. The next president will step into the role during a time of strict oversight from the UF Board of Trustees.

Gainesville Police Department and Gainesville Fire Rescue responded to a car accident outside Wild Pie on Thursday afternoon, which left one SUV flipped on its side. 

The Board of Governors, a majority of which are appointees of Gov. Ron DeSantis, voting month to purge UF’s general education catalog from more than 1,200 courses to just under 300. 

Holland, a UF animal sciences sophomore, died in Gainesville March 2. An oncoming car struck Holland while she was driving her moped into the parking lot at Southwest Recreation Center, where she exercised daily. She was 20 years old.

When Gov. Ron DeSantis hand-picked Joseph Ladapo as Florida’s surgeon general in September 2021, the role came with a second high-profile appointment: a tenured faculty position at UF. But Ladapo’s colleagues still aren’t sure what he does to earn his salary at the university. Some say not much.
