The union is asking the mayor and the school board to draw upon a state law that allows middle and high school students one excused absence per year to attend a “civic event.”

The move expands an initiative between Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Public Library that aims to make it easier for students to get resources at all of the city’s public libraries.
