If the season ended today, the Spokane Chiefs would qualify for the playoffs out of the Western Conference of the Western Hockey League.

KENT — The Spokane Chiefs entered Sunday's game on a modest two-game win streak, finding renewed success with a power play which had struggled much of the season. 

West Valley finished the season as the No. 5 team in the state by RPI – but the RPI calculations didn’t take into account the Eagles’ loss to 1A Lakeside or its win over Idaho 4A Timberlake. Regardless, they were matched up against Aberdeen, which was the No. 13 RPI, leaving many to wonder what happened in the seeding committee meeting.

The last games of the high school football regular season is upon us. Some teams will move on to the state playoffs, some will get one last nonleague game to head into the offseason on a good note, and some will face a dreaded tiebreaker or play-in game at the beginning of next week.

The Spokane Chiefs and the Everett Silvertips came into Sunday’s game as two of the stingier teams in the Western Hockey League, ranked third and second respectively in fewest goals allowed this season.

It all comes down to this. The high school football regular season that started in the sweltering heat of August will soon come to its completion in another soggy, windy late October.

In case you missed it in Sunday’s “Highlights” column, the Greater Spokane League and Mid-Columbia Conference – which make up District 6 in the 4A and 3A ranks – finally decided last week how to distribute the berths the district is allotted from each of the classifications.
