The mission of the Sierra Club Foundation (SCF) is to educate, inspire, and empower humanity to preserve the natural and human environment. We recognize that to advance our shared vision of a climate safe world for all, we must nurture meaningful partnerships with Tribal leaders. Many Tribal lands are rich in renewable resources, including clean energy sources such as wind and solar. Yet Indigenous peoples are also on the frontline of fossil fuel extraction and exploitation, and are often the first communities to feel the impacts of climate change.

This past July, the Sierra Club sponsored a group of military veterans on a rafting trip into the Grand Canyon where they learned even more about the importance of establishing a Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail in Northern Virginia one soggy morning I encountered a thru-hiker who started on the trail in Georgia months ago and is heading up to the northern end of the Trail in Mount Katahdin, 1,200 miles away, in Baxter State Park. A spectacular wilderness area in Northern Maine that is home to lynx, loons, moose and bear, the 200,000 acre Baxter State Park is remote and pristine.

After making billions of dollars in revenue from our national parks, Delaware North Companies is aiming to extort the federal government for even more. Enough is enough.

This week, the Sierra Club and lands activists across the country scored a major win when the U.S. Senate unanimously joined the House of Representatives in passing a bill that designates the Boulder–White Clouds in Idaho as our nation’s newest wilderness area.
