UNL to explore combining journalism, broadcast majors amid faculty departures

Approximately 430 faculty at NU's campuses in Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney met the criteria to apply. NU limited the opportunity to faculty aged 62 or older with 10 years' service.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln said it plans to put the gift from health care giant Abbott to work funding a series of initiatives that improve students' physical and emotional health.

If finalized by UNL and approved by the Board of Regents, these are the six programs that will be axed and the number of faculty who will lose their jobs.

The proposed cuts would result in 77 faculty being eyed for elimination, including 71 in tenure-track positions, and affect the academic programs of some 640 Husker students.

The monetary gifts will support student scholarships, academic programs, athletic teams, faculty, research, and capital projects across the University of Nebraska system.

On average, UNL has reduced its budget by 2.8% each year since the COVID-19 pandemic reached U.S. shores in the spring of 2020, totaling $75 million.

Cindy McCaffrey and her husband, Mick, created the McCaffrey Student Success Fund to support UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications student workers.

The meeting, which will include a public comment period, will begin at 10 a.m. in the Nebraska State Office Building hearing room at 301 Centennial Mall South.
