Instead of making demands of others who have shown us empty promises, how can we take control and steer our own opportunities? Black ownership is the answer.

Today is a day of contradiction. Trump is being inaugurated on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This juxtaposition might be exactly what America needs to see itself more clearly. As Bernice King, stated, “This nation will be confronted with the sharp contrast between my father, who espoused love and justice, and Trump who has often sanction[ed] hatred and injustice.” What will do when face-to-face with who we’ve become as a nation?

After exit polls, many Black folks are vowing to opt out of the fight in the coming years, after feeling betrayed by the low turnout from white voters and non-Black people — which is understandable but unsustainable. Celebrity cameos, memes, and Michelle Obama soundbites have been dominating the discourse. But reproductive rights need to be at the center of the Democrats’ platform and activists are fighting to make sure no one is left behind.

Joe Biden has stepped down as the U.S. Democratic presidential nominee and endorsed Kamala Harris. People should spend a lot less time fixating on whether Harris’ Black womanhood is a liability, and instead focus on what her campaign promises and platform messaging need to be to win.
