Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital is one of those places many people don’t give a second thought about — until you need it. That was the case with my brother Zach, who spent many of his childhood years at the Stollery being treated for ulcerative colitis.

After some restoration, Alberta’s oldest cenotaph will be ship-shape for one of Edmonton’s largest outdoor Remembrance Day ceremonies, drawing 4,500 to 5,000 people a year.

Many Canadians proudly wear a poppy as a sign of gratitude for soldiers who’ve put their lives on the line, but what some people might not know is there are actually quite a few guidelines to wearing one.

At the end of the Second World War, more than 45,000 young women left their homes and made the journey across the Atlantic. They were war brides. Many of them knew very little of their new homes and what awaited them.
